Sir, please. It's right there, in print, clear as day. 'MAYORAL SCANDAL - CAVORTING WITH DEMONS' - save your lies for the courts.
ABILITY:
Each day, 3 living players must make a different public statement about the game, or good loses. Tonight, if 1 statement was false, a player dies.
STORYTELLER NOTES:
As with the Gossip, consider what would be termed a “valid” statement. “X is good” is a valid statement, for instance, but something like “X is not not good” is not a validly different statement. Statements that refer to situations outside the game, or joke statements don’t count. When taking statements, preference those with their hands up first where possible, but if players are eager, try to select different players each time so that everyone has a turn to prove themselves. If the Muckraker dies, continue to take statements as per normal.
If a Muckraker is drunk or preached on its first day, its presence is not announced to the town until its power is active.
The Muckraker thrives off scandal, causing death at night due to false declarations about the town.
Playing as the Muckraker
Unlike the Gossip, who causes deaths on the basis of true statements, the Muckraker causes deaths if any or all of the statements are false. As such, make claims that sound plausible, but ultimately turn out to be untrue, and encourage your teammates to do the same. Draw suspicion to the statements that are made, puzzle out how you may be able to twist them to your advantage: and if not, enjoy free information about the town to help hone your Demon’s kills! Also contrary to the Gossip’s ability, for as long as your ability is in play, players must make Muckraker statements, so there is no opting out when the game state becomes tenuous.
You may also want to consider poisoning the Muckraker if possible and jumping in with an untrue statement that sells false worlds, but remember that the Muckraker has to be poisoned at the point they would activate in the night.
Example
James is the Muckraker. On Day 1, three good players make true statements, and no-one dies. On Day 2, a good player makes a false statement, and someone dies at night. On Night 4, James is poisoned: during the day, James makes a false statement about their Demon's alignment. No-one dies at night.
Fighting the Muckraker
Given that there are things you know to be true about the game, feel free to jump in and share them with town to fulfill the requirements of the Muckraker, but do remember that you may feed valuable information to the evil team in the process. Keep your statements vague enough to be valid, or reveal information that is already public. Consider tracking Muckraker statements to pull together an understanding of the world, and puzzle out which statements are false (and who is making them!)
Example
Marta is the Noble, who claims on Day 1 that their Noble pings are a valid Noble ping; two other players declare that a Muckraker is in play, and an Imp (the only Demon on script) is in play. Someone dies at night: Marta infers that she was poisoned on Night 1.
