'Over my dead body', you say? Well, if you insist.
ABILITY:
Each night*, choose a player: they die. Once per game, at night*, you may choose to register as dead & poison 1 Townsfolk neighbour.
STORYTELLER NOTES:
Consider running this Demon on scripts where multiple deaths in the night are common. Tinker, Gambler, Gossip, Assassin or Acrobat, for instance, are great roles to pair with a Polterghast and enables them to make the most of their ability without being found out easily.
The Polterghast plays dead.
Playing as the Polterghast
You are a Demon with slices of the reality-bending power of the Zombuul, and the poisoning power of a Vigormortis, but with greater agility and flexibility. Use it to your advantage! Bluffing roles like the Gossip or Gambler enable you to sell a world where you have died to your ability, and push suspicion on to others while also corrupting information around town. Choosing when to activate your unique ability - and how - lets you control the narrative of the game.
You can, for instance, “die” during the night alongside another Townsfolk to sell an otherwise difficult Gambler or Tinker bluff; or you can sink a kill on an already dead player and use your ability to register as the only death during the night. Doing so may steer town away from a world where a Polterghast even exists!
Adapt your playstyle to the situation and know when it’s time to go, and the Polterghast becomes an incredibly strong Demon to pin down.
Example
Kimberly is the Polterghast claiming to be the Gossip. With seven players remaining, they gossip that the Demon is one specific player. They use their ability at night, poisoning their neighbour, and kill elsewhere.
Fighting the Polterghast
Polterghasts will frequently bluff roles that may die in the night given certain circumstances, so follow their claims closely. If their gossips or gambles sound implausible, there’s a good chance they’re bluffing about the reasons for their death in the night.
Similarly, as opposed to a Vigormortis where poisoned Townsfolk simply point to killed Minions, poisoned Townsfolk may give you a direct line to the Demon itself!
Also consider that until a Polterghast activates their ability, they are a stationary, “normal” Demon, so you only need to start worrying about whether a Polterghast is pulling tricks until viable candidates have died in the night.
Example
Bobby is the Fortune Teller with a yes on a claimed Tinker. The Tinker appears to die at night. Bobby nominates the dead Tinker, just to make sure. Bobby was right.
Jinxes
Scarlet Woman: If the Polterghast dies while registering as dead, the Scarlet Woman becomes the Polterghast whose ability has already been used.
