Every person has their own shape, shade and hue. I am all of them.
ABILITY:
Each night, you gain a new ability and learn two characters it could belong to. Once per game, the ability is that of an Outsider or Minion.
STORYTELLER NOTES:
Balance the Chameleon's ability around how town is faring: selecting the best ability or abilities from available roles based on whether the Chameleon's team is winning ensures the character helps their team while still feeling balanced.
Try to give the Chameleon "pairs" of roles that prompt similarly, even if the resulting information is different. The Fortune Teller, Innkeeper and Harpy; the Monk, Poisoner and Lycanthrope; the Ravenkeeper, Farmer and Klutz would be valid groups to select from on any given night.
If the Chameleon's team needs a boost, you could consider giving it two roles that aren't compatible in terms of picking and choosing, to guide the Chameleon towards the role they're likely selecting for. You may also want to do this more frequently if the Chameleon is poisoned or drunk.
Note that with Demons that cause "incorrect" information like the Vortox, Chronos or Baku, the Chameleon learns correct roles, if not correct info.
The Chameleon sheds its role each night for something new, but may gain something unfavourable in the process.
Playing as the Chameleon
Determining which role you have gained each night is essential in decoding your information. A 2 on Night 1 could be a Chef, but it could be a Clockmaker. A 1 on Night 3 could be an Oracle, but it could be an Empath. Triangulate your varied info with that from the town around you in order to make sense of what you have on hand.
You always know which roles you might be gaining information for, so even if you don't receive information, or wake at all, you can be reasonably assured that you are doing something. It's simply your job to know what.
Remember that once per game, you will be given a Minion or Outsider ability, and it's likely you won't know the repercussion of that until it's too late. So be up front with anyone you might adversely affect, prove that you're worth trusting, and hopefully you can keep the damage to a minimum. Better yet - if you believe you've picked up a Minion's ability, why not use it for good, and point it towards those you think are evil?
Example
Judy is the Chameleon. She learns the roles Chef and Empath on Night 1. She learns Devil's Advocate or Monk on Night 2, and is asked to pick a player. She chooses the Oracle, who dies during the night. On Night 3, she learns Artist or Ravenkeeper, and receives no further prompts.
Bluffing as the Chameleon
As the Chameleon, you can craft amazing worlds with a bevy of information from all over the script. Want to make up a Steward ping? You got it. Want to imply that perhaps you were the Lycanthrope who got a kill last night? No problem. Nothing is too farfetched, as long as you sound credible.
At all times, your role is masked with ambiguity, so making fake claims isn't necessarily an admission of evil - just that you might not be receiving the information you think you are. Push on your info to best suit the world you need to build, and don't worry, because you're always able to change your role the next day.
Better yet, if you can coordinate your movements with any in-play Minions, you can even mimic the night you receive an evil ability. If you've made someone Cerenovus mad, let them know it was you to build trust!
Example
Jake is the Vortox, bluffing as the Chameleon. He pretends to send a Nightwatchman ping to his Minion, and tells them to pretend that it was instead sent by the other Minion. On Night 2, he kills the Town Crier and says that he was told he could be the Lycanthrope or the Acrobat, selecting the Town Crier, who died. Jake feigns surprise as he assumes he must have picked up the Lycanthrope's ability.
