English 202: Appreciation of Literature

This course is designed to increase the student’s appreciation of literature with an emphasis on modern literary forms. The course supports Tri County’s goals of providing students with opportunities to develop their abilities in independent critical thinking and their intellectual capacity for change, as well as their skills in effective communication. It also aims at instilling in students the ability to pursue aesthetically and ethically rewarding lives. Additionally, the course supports the English Department’s goal of fostering students’ abilities to interpret and understand major literary works in a variety of genres. Upon completion of this course, students should have attained the following: Proficiency with the skills needed for the critical reading of short stories, drama, and poetry. A greater understanding of the historical and cultural development of literature and of what literature has to say to and about us. Greater proficiency in responding to literature through both writing and speaking is also a goal.

Prerequisites: scored in the 230’s on MAPS testing in Reading and Language, AND maintained a minimum of a 90% grade point average in their most recent English Language Arts course in order to enroll in this class.
