JUNIOR ENGLISH

Prerequisite: English 9,10Grades: Grade 11Credits: 10Credit Type: EnglishOffered: Year-Long

One major focus in Junior English is writing the proper essay, primarily the persuasive/perspective essay (ACT directed). Students will complete writings using a variety of forms in order to meet the Nebraska Reading and Writing Standards 12.2.1-2.5. Also, elements of both fiction and non-fiction will be explored to enhance the students’ writing skills. Personal response/reflection journals will be kept. Sharing one’s writings via public speaking will also be expected.

Another major focus will be American Literature, American authors, and the time periods during which they lived and wrote. Each class will do group readings of selected American novels and/or particular Nebraska authors. Students will be expected to work in “literary circle” groups. Study guides, worksheets, vocabulary, personal reflections, quizzes, and tests will be used in various ways as assessment. The students will also be assessed on the Nebraska Reading and Writing Standards, particularly those focused on literature.

This course will also include an extensive amount of ACT Preparation work utilizing John Baylor's On to College Program as well as many other practice techniques.
