I visited Oichi Kofun with Chairman Takahashi and Vice Chairman Yamazaki of the Oichi Kofun Preservation Society.
Thanks to the efforts of the preservation group, the road to the base of Oichi Kofun has been paved with concrete and there is also a parking lot.
The hope of the members of the preservation group was, "We want people to know about Oichi Kofun. We want high school students to learn about Oichi Kofun and spread information about it."
The uphill road from the parking lot to the tumulus was paved with concrete until halfway through. Once the concrete ended, the path was paved with artificial trees. The slope was steep and the fallen leaves made it slippery.
However, these efforts are the result of the efforts of the preservation society. Oichi Kofun is not designated as a historic site. All financial, material, time, and human efforts are made by the preservation society's volunteers.
After climbing a steep slope, you will arrive at the mound of Oichi Kofun. The soil had already washed away at the time of excavation. It is now protected by sandbags.
This is the view south from the top of the mountain. Although there are many trees, you can clearly see the village at the foot of the mountain. Slightly to the right is the direction of Nanatsuike Pond in Fuchu City (where the ancient Tsuneki Castle is said to have been located).
The distinctive feature of Oichi Kofun is its octagonal shape. The stone coffin is cross-shaped. There are no other examples of octagonal tombs in the western part of Japan, except for the Kinai region. The cross-shaped stone coffin is also an extremely rare tomb.
In the future, I would like to explore its relationship with the mainland and the Korean Peninsula, and why it is located in this position.
