Scratchboard

Artist Statement

For this project we made a value scale. Since we were working with scratchboard we didn't have any greys for fading colors, so instead we had to use different line weights and spacing to create the values. For my value scale, I decided to make a guy fishing because I thought it would be more interesting to look at. I mostly used the sky and water to create a sense of value by adding more wave lines, or clouds. For our final project, we printed photos and transferred an outline onto the scratchboard paper. The materials I used were two scratchboard utensils, one with a fine tip and the other one like a wire paintbrush. In my project, I used lines to create texture in the feathers, and table, I used value to create contrast between the chicks and the other elements of the photo in hopes of making them the main point of focus. A struggle I had during this process was the picnic table. I didn't want to add too much detail and make the piece too crowded, and also my hands hurt from scratching so much already. I think my decision of leaving out some elements in the picture made it better in the end because you can focus on the chicks. I really just like how the whole project came out, I'm really proud of how it turned out, and I think it is one of my personal favorites.
