Artist Statement

For this project we were instructed to create two different logos, one being of a noun, and the other of something relating to Freeport High School, with a limited color pallet. First, we wrote down a noun on a piece of paper and put it into a box, where we would later blindly pick a prompt on which to base our logo. For the Freeport logo, we got free choice in what we wanted our logo to represent. We created sketches, and final prints before uploading them to photoshop, in order to create the final piece.

The materials I used to create my logos were my noun prompt, pencil, my notebook, drawing paper, sharpie, and photoshop. I started by sketching ideas with a pencil in my notebook for my noun, which was "Mexicali Blues," and attempting to create something that represented the store. Then I took those and created a final draft in sharpie. After this, I started the process of my FHS design. My first step was coming up with what part of school I enjoyed the most, which was field hockey. I then played around with different ways of incorporating FHS and field hockey into one design. I knew it was important to have the sticks, and then I settled on the idea of using a falcon. I made my sketch in pencil, before also using sharpie on drawing paper to create my final image. After creating our logo, I uploaded images of my logos on photoshop. We used photoshop to clean up our logos and make them solid designs.

Coming up with an idea for my Mexicali logo was a challenge because of the fact that they already have a brand and a logo. However, I just used the knowledge and experience I've had in their store to reflect the vibes given off. For my FHS logo, I chose field hockey because of how important it is to me. Field hockey is a chance for me to spend time with my friend outside of academics, and gives me a break from school, and homework. It is also freeing, and so relieving to be out on the field giving it your all after a hard day at school. It gives me a break from responsibility and stress, as well as giving me a connection to people I enjoy being around.
