Artist Statement

For this project we were given three prompts to do 20 minutes studies. These prompts were a study of a hand including negative space, your own face with a focus on a specific feature, and objects that are important to you. For my hand, I chose to make a circle with my index finger and thumb, and maneuver my other fingers to create a more interesting drawing. For my face, I focused on my hair because it's one of my favorite features. Finally, for my objects, I picked my plants and record player because I interact with them daily.

I didn't use a lot of materials for this project. I used basic 9x12 watercolor paper, 2h, and 2b pencils. I sketched lightly with my pencil before going back and creating darker lines so the art is bold.

I didn't use a lot of creativity or thought behind the hand drawing, however, the other pieces did have meaning. For my self-portrait, I focused on my hair. This is because my hair is my favorite feature, and also it is very versatile. I feel hair is something that can always be changing and showing a period of my life. I wanted to document how I look right now. And for my objects, I chose my plant because I feel it makes my room, my room. I care for these plants, and they are a part of my daily life. I also included my record player because music is big for me. It allows me to express emotions, and sets the mood for the day.
