Artist Statement:
For this project, we were instructed to make a design that we could use to print with silkscreen, on fabric, and paper. I chose to do a sanddollar because it related to the work I've been doing all year, and it would be a nice end to this year's art process. I wanted the ink to outline the sanddollar so I made thick lines that could be seen through the ink screen. I uploaded my design to my laptop to make it black and white, and then traced in and downloaded an SVG file so a cricket machine could cut my design. I then used silk screen cloth and a wooden frame to create a printable screen. I chose to do a navy t-shirt and white ink so the design would stand out. Then for my extended print, I used a print where the ink didn't fully transfer onto the paper and filled it in with a pento to complete the design. I then drew different kinds of shells to mimic a pile of shells with the sand dollar as the focal point. Only the sandollar has color and is larger for emphasis.Â
