Sustained Investigation 2

My mind is a Zoo

Artist Statement

For my second sustained investigation, I wanted to illustrate on paper the state of confusion and chaos inside one's mind. My piece suggests that a person's mind can be overwhelming, and difficult to navigate and understand. It also implies that different thoughts and emotions are jumbled together, almost like a jungle.

For this project, we were given our own choice of materials. I used materials from a past project. I began with an old gouache and colored pencil swatch sheet as my base, and on top sketched out animals, plants, and trees using a black fine-tip sharpie in order to make the sketches look more cartoonish.

I went through a few different processes while creating this final piece. I used shapes as the foundation for my ideas, creating animals and figures out of the composition and what I saw.
