Watercolor, Acrylic, and Marker on Rough Pressed Paper

Artist Statement

For this project we were asked to compose art with circles. We got the free choice to choose how and where the shapes were included. I chose to make my art on a circle, and then add another circle for the sun. We also were given the choice of what materials we were going to use.

For my project, I used rough-pressed paper. For the background, which is the mountains in my painting, I used watercolor, with a lot of layers of green brown, and grey in order to create depth and texture. And for the sky, I used light blue, and white acrylic paint applied with a dry brush to create light edges. The river was made with dark blue watercolor with white acrylic paint for highlights. The entire foreground was made with acrylics. I mixed colors to create different values and shades of green so they didn't blend in with the back of the piece, and then for the flowers, I used the back of my brush to make the petals. Finally, for the sun/moon, I just used various shades of yellow, blue, grey, and black to create a new level that comes off of the painting in order to make it more interesting.

This Piece is about freedom. Just the freedom of being who you are, and expressing yourself. The running river just symbolizes the flow and change of existing in space. Also the flowers show growth and development in the land, but can also relate to you personally.
