Oil Pastel and Watercolor on Watercolor Paper
Artist Statement
For this project we had to draw our peers without looking at their faces. We studied our classmates so our eyes and hands followed each other's movements, in order to create a blind drawing of faces. We were instructed to do 5 faces however I drew 8 to make the piece more full.
The materials I used on this project were black oil pastels and watercolor on watercolor paper. I used the black oil pastels to blindly draw the faces on my paper and then used it to go back in and draw the hands on my piece. Then I used watercolor and fanned out black around then to add contrast to the white hand and the background. It also fits the idea of my painting. I wanted to also make the faces their own part of the artwork, so I fanned out yellow around them. After I finished separating the parts of the piece I went colored the faces a really light green because I just thought the color looked nice and blended with the other aspects of the piece. Finally, I went into the background and painted it blue with watercolor in order to have a more saddening tone to the piece.
The purpose of my piece was to convey feelings of almost being lost and confused about who you are. I made it so the hands could not actually touch the faces because they are not the right fit in a way. The coloring of the face and the blank hands contrast almost to make them feel as if they didn't belong together.
