9x12 Silly Spaceship

Artist Statement

We were given a list of silly prompts to choose from. I chose the "Silly Spaceship" because I felt it had a lot of free choice in the prompt. Some other options were more specific. We were allowed to use any art materials available to us.

I used a pencil to sketch out my basic ideas and play around with ideas of what could make this spaceship "silly" because pencil is erasable, and I didn't have a specific idea yet. When I figured out how to make the ship atypical by adding a weird shape, airplane wings, an earth-like compartment, and an alien party, I began to add colors with markers. I wanted this piece to be colorful because it was "silly." I wanted a lot of contrast in the work so it would be interesting and eye-catching.

I wanted this piece to be childlike and fun. I also wanted it to be something that was simple and cute, and conveyed a feeling of summer fun, because I miss summer dearly.
