Sustained Investigation 1

Artist Statement:

This is the first installment of my sustained investigation. The point of this project is to come up with a theme and create three pieces of art that convey it, all while experimenting with art. My inquiry is "How do you show emotion through art." We had free choice in any materials used during this set of projects.

The materials I used for this project were watercolor, markers, and a pen on watercolor paper. I began by using very light washes of yellow, orange, red, and purple to create a sunset sky. I then used watercolor and a paper towel to create a rocky texture on the rocks. I then used light washes of various shades of brown for the house before outlining that and the person with a black pen. My final step in this project was the water, where I used a different assortment of colored markers in a line to create water texture.

This art piece is very messing and overwhelming to look at, and that is entirely the point of it. It is a stressful point in life when midterms are coming up, and colleges and grades are something on the mind. I wanted this work to portray the stress and overwhelmingness I felt at the time. The simple dog and person completely contrast with the environment, which represents how uncomfortable it is to be put in that stressful situation.
