Block printing

First we were asked to carve opposite images into linoleum, making one positive and the other negative. Then we were asked to carve a self portrait into linoleum, then make prints. The subject of the creation is myself. I made the work using carving tools, a block of linoleum, ink, and paper. I also used some paint and colored pencils.

I used the element of color while coloring some extended prints. I also used shape to create the image. I used line to add value and texture. I used the principle of contrast because there was a balance of black and white. After making a print, I would then carve into the block more to alter the image.

The prints that has meaning is the alternative background. The alternative background is the lyrics of my favorite song. The others are just images of myself that I altered to look cooler. I am proudest of how neat the prints turned out and how much it looks like me. I struggled carving, since it was hard to not mess up and slip. It was also hard to get the right amount of ink on the block. I just worked carefully and tried multiple times until I got it right. If I could change the project I would make my nose smaller and look at the reference image more when creating the prints.
