Negative space drawing

For these assignments we were asked to focus on the negative space in a piece and create an interesting negative space. The subjects of the first work are leaves. The subjects of the second work are stools. The first work was made using colored pencils, and the second was made with sharpie and watercolor paint.

In the first work, I used color, balance, contrast and pattern. In the second, I used color, space, texture, and pattern. The leaf drawing was originally going to be just red and purple fading, but then I added the patterns. The stool drawing was at first just going to be the rainbow, but I added the patterns in the smaller spaces. I was basically trying to make the art more interesting.

The leaf drawing is just supposed to be a cute pattern behind some leaves. But the stool drawing is made to be colorful and unique. The smaller spaces with the patterns are like windows or stained glass. It provides contrast from the big space. The stool drawing is very colorful and interesting like I think I am. I have a wild imagination and it somewhat shows what I see. I am not very proud of much in the leaf work other than the colors, but I'm very proud of the gradient in the stool work and the patterns. I struggled in coloring dark enough in the leaf work, and I struggled thinking up all the different patterns in my stool work. To overcome these struggles I just kept working through them. I would just like the leaf artwork to be more interesting and I would like the stool artwork to be neater, as I got outside of the lines a lot.
