This drawing features someone walking through the woods on a cold night. I know not where they're going, nor who they are, but I know that they're walking deeper into the woods. It's night, so they can't be up to anything good. I drew inspiration from the art style of storybooks and creepy stories I've read.
The work was made from graphite, pencil, black pens, watercolor, and charcoal. First I sketched around the ink blots, creating my basic idea of someone walking during a windy night. The ink blots became the hair, glove, scarf, and moon. I then lined the subject with the pens. Then, using watercolor, I colored the trees. After they dried, I lined them as well. I used charcoal to make the path and footprints, and watercolor to make the shadows and the sky.
I used color to create emphasis on the subject, to create contrast between the subject and the background. I also used line in varying thickness to provide contrast. I used space to show the length of the forest and the journey that the subject is about to go on. I tried to show movement through the scarf and the subject walking. The project was originally going to be all black and white except for the scarf, but I figured that would be boring and I also had no black watercolor. So I dug some stuff out of my sister's paint stuff and used liquid watercolor for the first time until my mom brought black watercolor home from school. My next steps would be to tidy up the black watercolor in the sky to eliminate the white by the tree branches. I would also try to add a few more shadows and fix the subject's shadow.
