This drawing is based on the prompt, "an alien swimming in pudding." The subject of this drawing is a character my sister and I made up during the area 51 raids. Its name is Bikini Alien. We don't know what gender it is, nor do we speak its language. It was naked when we got it, and the only clothing in the car was a bikini. So we called it bikini alien. Bikini alien is very curious of our world, and doesn't understand how we do things at all. It has PTSD from being captured, and doesn't like loud noises. I suppose it wanted to swim one day, but didn't understand that we swim in water, so it started swimming in pudding.
To create this, I used graphite pencil, black pens of varying thicknesses, water based markers, white charcoal, construction paper, and an exacto knife. first i sketched the drawing, then I used the black pens to line it, then colored with the markers and made hi-lights with the charcoal. I cut out the alien with the exacto knife, then used marker and charcoal on construction paper to make the background. I then glued the alien to the background.
I used line while making the line art, varying thicknesses to create value. I tried to create a satisfying color scheme that provided contrast from the subject and the background. I used the white charcoal to create texture on the water wings and goggles. I also tried to create movement with the background. I originally started with the Alien on sketchbook paper, and was at a loss as to what to do for the background. I didn't want to use watercolor or paint, didn't have any magazines, and my printer wasn't working. So I looked at a photo of pudding as a reference and drew onto construction paper instead. My next steps would be to have the subject interact with the background.
