Sustained Investigation #7

This piece is based off of the song Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles. It shows how the song sounds almost magical and transports you to another world. I was starting to get overwhelmed by doing such dark, emotional drawings, because they were very personal and while I'm proud of them, you can only do that for so long. I wanted to create a more peaceful and whimsical piece that related to my childhood. As a young kid my favorite band was the Beatles, and that was the only thing I would listen to for the longest time. Their music reminds me of simpler, more innocent times. I wanted to portray that in a piece, so I picked one of my favorite songs of theirs, which also has a lot of imagery. Though the imagery in this song is mostly from the music itself, not from the lyrics.

The materials I used so far are graphite pencil and black Faber Castell pens. I plan to use watercolor paint to color this piece.

I experimented with processes by choosing a less heavy, emotional, and dark song and by picking something more lighthearted. I also focused less on the imagery in the song, and more how it made me feel when I listened to it. I also decided to add value with pencil, then put watercolor over it instead of trying to add value with watercolor only. I also tried to experiment with perspective, and drew the subject in a more difficult pose. I also tried to work with drawing nature and landscape. I wanted to create more of a sense of space with this piece. My next steps will be to color this piece.
