Sustained Investigation #4

This work is based off of Skylines and Turnstiles by My Chemical Romance. The song is about 9/11, which the lead singer/lyricist, Gerard Way, witnessed firsthand while working in New York. This lead to him writing Skylines and Turnstiles, and eventually forming the band My Chemical Romance. I decided to create art based off of this song because there is a lot of emotion in it; grief, anger, fear, confusion, pain. I wanted to create a visual for that. When I created this, I was also feeling very emotional because it was election day. I'm not here to compare election day to 9/11 (because that's ridiculous), but I was feeling very strong emotions at the time, especially fear. So I wanted to create artwork that especially captured fear while still holding true to the imagery of the song.

The materials I used are sharpie markers and pens, a white gel pen, and black Faber Castell pens. I colored this with watercolor paint and water based markers.

I used a lot of contrast to create this. I wanted many pieces to be all black to create that contrast. I also wanted to create space by having a city in the distance against a broken sky, and layering up each image. i also used color, making sure to coordinate the colors throughout the whole piece. The only thing that has really changed about my project is I added an extra eye, more lines to emphasize certain images, and cracks in the sky. Since posting the line art I have added color. My next steps would be to clean up the grey background a bit and go over some of the line art again to make it darker.
