Personal Statement: As a Second Language speaker myself, I immigrated to the United States when I was in the 5th grade. I learned English from the librarian in my primary school, who introduced me to the world of books and images and became my anchor and teacher in my new world. Imagery was my tool of communication when I had no language to express my thoughts. My first ten years of teaching were a magical and memorable experience. My classroom was a United Nations where everyone spoke a language other than English. Over the years, the student population has changed dramatically. I continuously seek new professional learning opportunities to strengthen my teaching practice to meet the diverse needs of my students, to increase student participation using academic and social language, to help develop the ELLs-SWDs’ metacognitive development, schema building, contextualization and bridging their learning gaps. I also work to help build a community of learners in my school.
