BIOGRAPHY
As a computer graphic artist, my journey into exploring digital media art began with video art. Initially, I used video editing software to create cohesive pieces, incorporating effects, adjusting colors, manipulating content, and integrating sounds. In addition, I also explored how programming languages enabled me to develop interactive works for the audience and how VR/AR and 3D technologies brought my imaginative world to life by transforming my 2D drawings and ideas into 3D models. Additionally, I honed my skills in digital illustrations by refining my hand-drawn sketches with photo editing software, employing motion graphics and frame-by-frame animation to narrate stories. I even had the opportunity to create video games, allowing players to experience the stories as they progress through the game.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The intersection of technology and creativity has always fascinated me, and digital mediums present unique opportunities for artists to express their ideas in innovative ways. I am passionate about using technology to convey messages and stories, aiming to leave a lasting impact on those who experience my work. Above all, I want my art to bring positivity, fun energy, and wonder to anyone who engages with it. With the fast-paced life that everyone lives, with varying degrees of stress and anxiety, I strive to infuse happy and funny elements into my art, creating a positive vibe that can brighten someone's day. Ultimately, I desire my art to bring happiness, comfort, and relaxation to those who experience it.
Truc Hoang Thanh Tran, Self-Playing Video Game, Motion Graphics & Simulation Art, 1920 x 1080, 2023
This project is a self-playing video game based on Tamagotchi; a digital pet created by Akihiro Yokoi in Japan. It aims to subvert the idea of video games through a gallery installation simulation. The original design of Tamagotchi is very simple, with pixelated images and a monochrome display with a few buttons that show the creature's status, such as hunger and happiness levels, and provide access to functions such as feeding, playing, healing, and go to the restroom. Therefore, I decided to recreate the game asset with more advanced graphics and colors while maintaining the same functionality as the earlier version of the Tamagotchi game. To subvert the idea of video games, I created a gallery installation simulation showing the video game displayed in different ways, blurring the lines between other forms of digital media. The center shows the original games as it runs, while the video on the right was cropped and subverted the UI elements by turning them into a short animation video. Additionally, I used cartoon sound effects for the original game, which helped to enhance the animation vibes in the video. By removing all UI elements, the characters' actions will continue without the players' control. This approach subverts the idea of the original video as a self-playing video game/video game. The video on the right shows that the game backgrounds were cropped into canvas size, subverted the character and UI elements, and kept static. I project it onto a blank white canvas to turn it into a painting to subvert the original idea of the game background as a room painting. This approach also challenges the traditional idea of painting as a static, two-dimensional art form created using traditional materials such as acrylic, oil, watercolor, and ink. Moreover, projecting the video game background onto the canvas creates a hybrid form of art that blurs the lines between traditional painting and new media art forms.
Truc Hoang Thanh Tran, What is Art?, Motion Graphics, 720 x 720, 2023
I created a dynamic and vivid video project using After Effects and free-stock resources, applying motion and a variety of Effects to enhance the visual impact. The project was created based on the philosophy of the Dada Art Movement. This video is inspired by the concept photomontage in which a single video replaces a single image to combine two or more original and existing videos as well as images. All the elements in the footage are arranged in an illogical and chaotic way, which are vital characteristics of photomontage. Based on research, photomontage is a flexible technique that can combine and juxtapose different images and ideas to create new meanings and perspectives. The video explores the battle between AI Art and Traditional Art. I address the controversy surrounding AI art and traditional art by incorporating images of classic works of art alongside images of machine-generated art. By combining these disparate elements in unexpected ways, the video challenges the viewer's assumptions about what constitutes "real" art and explores the tension between human creativity and machine intelligence. The purpose of using photomontage is to encourage viewers to explore the issues of AI Art and Traditional Art and generate new ideas and perspectives about the topic.
Truc Hoang Thanh Tran, Greeting Box, Coding Art, 900 x 900, 2022
In this project, I would also like to create a place where viewers can interact with my artwork by using their mice. So, I designed an avatar that viewers can interact with. I have set up several hidden greetings in the background, which viewers can see by moving the mouse around. When viewers move their mouse to the gift box, they will see the text 'I'm here.' My purpose in doing this is to evoke viewers' curiosity and desire to open it. My avatar has two parts. The first part is the covering that viewers click on to make the avatar appear, much like a Jack-in-the-box toy. My avatar is my greeting to everyone who sees it, and it is based on my personality. I'm not a naturally funny person, but I want others to feel comfortable and happy when they talk to me or work with me. Therefore, I decided to create something humorous that could make people happy just by looking at it. Furthermore, my goal in making art is to convey a happy, funny, and positive vibe to viewers. I chose the image of a clown as the main character for my avatar because the clown's purpose is to induce hearty laughter. To make it more vivid and eye-catching, I incorporated different pastel colors into my avatar because pastel colors have an uplifting effect on viewers' moods. However, the image of a clown can sometimes be associated with a scary atmosphere. So, I rounded up all the angles of the shape and used round shapes to boost the character's cuteness and eliminate the frightening side of the clown's image. Additionally, I combined the clown with a toy to make it look soft and cute.
Truc Hoang Thanh Tran, Weird Dream, 3D Graphics, 2022
In this project, I delve deeper into the concept of weird dreams. Using Three.js, I employed the stereo effect to create a distorted scene with the aim of evoking a sense of weirdness – the feeling that things are not as they seem. At first, the scene appears to be a white space filled with many jelly-like pieces. However, changing the perspective can reveal something different.
Truc Hoang Thanh Tran, Bearvengers, 3D Scene, 2022
This work was inspired by the piece 'Happy Girl' and influenced by the 'Captain America' and the 'Avengers Assemble' moment from the movie 'Avengers: Endgame.' My aim is to incorporate that epic moment into this work, but with a humorous twist.
