ARTIST STATEMENT
Inspired by her childhood growing up in the 2000s and reading shoujo manga, Tran’s work evokes feelings of nostalgia & happiness with soft pastels and playful characters. She draws everything from lovable mascots to dreamy subliminal scenes and hopes that her art will remind people of when things were simpler.
Rini Tran, Apollo's Room, Clip Studio Paint, 2023
Isometric drawing of my mascot, Apollo, who represents me online. His bedroom is filled with little references to my accomplishments as an artist over the years, from various art prints displayed on the wall to the plushies and pencil cases strewn across the floor, which represent items I have designed in the past.
Rini Tran, DREAM, Clip Studio Paint, 2023
Splash art illustration featuring various characters I have created over my life, from doodles I drew on worksheets in elementary school to mascots I designed for collectible merchandise. The piece is rendered in greyscale with screentone textures used to color Japanese comics, referencing my childhood dream to become a manga artist. DREAM reflects the years of hard work spent creating new things for myself and others to enjoy.
Rini Tran, Nokia, Clip Studio Paint, 2023
Painting study featuring my character standing next to a Nokia phone as a keychain figurine. Playing with scale and proportion is fun to add whimsy and interest to an illustration.
Rini Tran, Yume Utsutsu, Clip Studio Paint, 2023
This is the final project for an Art and Language class. Inspired by a song from my favorite Japanese band, Yume Utsutsu incorporates both English and Japanese interpretations of the same set of lyrics, marrying text with imagery to express a rainy afternoon, feelings of loss and longing, and the end of a relationship. This piece utilizes music as a universal language.
