Nabeeha Ahsan, Diary, June 4th., Photoshop, 2025
For this project, the disciplines I used were photo, digital art, and literature. I expanded on a photo I took in 2024 as part of a black and white series on how beauty standards have led to personal frustrations in feeling a constant need to be perfect. The new project takes on a life of its own, instead aiming to capture my feelings on realizing the fragility of life. While my expression expresses some fear, it also holds some uncertainty. The words on the right are taken from an actual diary entry that I wrote shortly after receiving some medical news. I found it to be interesting how my handwriting started to fall apart, paralleling how I spiraled that night.
Nabeeha Ahsan, All About the Latest Drama, Mixed Media, 16"x20", 2023
All About the Latest Drama is a commentary on the prevalence of distractions in today's age — particularly capitalistic distractions from global atrocities and climate change. I chose the orange and red color scheme because it reminded me of the California skies after the record-setting 2020 fires. Using the juxtaposition that is created by using magazine cut-outs alongside the grim colors, I aim to force the viewer to confront how intertwined consumption is with global issues.
When large corporations are exploiting cheap labor and Earth's limited resources while presenting us with a shiny new product, whose hands are covered in blood?
Nabeeha Ahsan, A Distorted Puzzle, Photoshop, 2023
My goal for A Distorted Puzzle was to capture the childlike charm and wonder of old memories while working with subjects from both my past and my present. The newer memories appear melancholic and use dull colors while the older ones are more vibrant because I associate them with happiness. I used doodles that I made with a crayon in 2018 and newer doodles from 2023 that were drawn with a pen and alcohol markers.
