ARTIST STATEMENT
In the beginning of my practice, I focused on character design without much thought behind it. I was influenced by the popular media that surrounded me. At first, I started as a traditional artist creating watercolor paintings of sketches I designed. I eventually shifted my practice to the digital space, focusing on game creation, coding, and digital illustration.
One thing that ties all of my works together is the concept. My works are influenced by mental health and my own experiences and interests. Early works had a darker tone to them, however, it has shifted to include more positive and lighthearted works.
It is important that my works are somewhat relevant to my own experiences because I feel that it allows me as the artist to get closer to the audience. It is the little influences from my personal life that make the pieces more powerful. I would like to continue using myself as inspiration for my pieces for future works.
Joey Montiel, In Reality, Twine Narrative Story Game, 2021
Originally, there was only one short chapter but after I finished the first, I couldn't help myself but to make the second. This game is about a person's journey through the afterlife. The main point of the story game is to discover why this person died. There are multiple options, some of which lead to dead ends.
Joey Montiel, My Dress Up, Digital illustration and Code, 2023
I wanted to create a dress-up game based on me. The idea I came up with is based on the simulation interface concept. I was inspired by a lot of dress-up games from my childhood. I used that inspiration to create something that simulated my every day.
A lot of my works are personal to me and this one is no exception. Enjoy helping me figure out what to wear.
