ARTIST STATEMENT
Squinting- Finding the underlying motivations behind the various forms of art and creative pursuits I have been fortunate to partake in, is no easy task. For me, the usual impetus of my art often arises from a sense of wonder and curiosity sparked by a particular subject. From there, I embark on a journey to discover whether it's going to be a contemplative piece, or whether the work demands a more provocative or humorous approach. While working on certain more involved projects, I tend to observe the creative process carefully. I have found that thinking about the work in its unique counterfactual space can serve as a valuable approach to explore new ideas and possibly question my own assumptions.
Tools- An admittedly long rooted belief of mine is that the multitude of artistic processes available are a powerful set of tools for exploring and learning something new about just about anything. It is important for me to feel like I'm using processes that help me gain some new vision and insight into what I'm engaged in. New tools to see. As a teacher I like to share this idea of tool making to witness a redefined art experience and students should have that.
THE SAN CARLOS LANTERN RELAY PROJECT
Steve Durie & Bruce Gardner, The San Carlos Lantern Relay Project
The San Carlos Lantern Relay is comprised of 8 six foot tall led lanterns placed along East San Carlos Street, between San Jose State University and Market Street in downtown San Jose. Each lantern is illuminated with an array of leds and is equipped with sensors that you can interact with to change the colors and patterns of each Lantern. The Lanterns simple interface give you opportunity to interact with others sending and receiving messages of light, up and down the urban corridor. The artwork is produced by the artists Steve Durie & Bruce Gardner.
