Demons and devils

Demons and devils, or Bes as they are called in Triman (Besi in plural) are creatures of the Black Serpent. They originate in his realm and enter our world to commit evil deed and tempt mortals into comitting evil deeds, which strengthen the Black Serpent, or to worship him or the Bes, strengthening their power even more.

These evil creatures, just like the Black Serpent, are unable to cross over into our realm on their own. However, they can unlike the Black Serpent be brought to our world by someone on this side opening a portal or summoning them. The mightier the caster opening the portal, the stronger can the Bes entering our world be. If all of mankind joined in worshiping the Black Serpent, that would give enough power for the Black Serpent to enter our world. That has, fortunately, never happened.

The weaker Bes will need a host to control in this world to interact with it, and it's spirit often animates undead. Stronger Bes can create a physical presence for themselves, often taking on vaguely humanoid shapes with horns on the head, spikes, wings and a tail. Their strength in our world depends on the strength of the ritual that brought them, the sacrifices given to them, and how many they kill in our world. Each person they kill increases their strength.

Some Bes seem to be unable to understand our world, and in stead of committing acts of evil perform bizarre actions. One such bes is known to take possession of outhouses through the realm, needing a special ritual to be driven out.

A warding spell will keep a Bes away, and most homes have such spells cast upon building. Furthermore a Bes can not attack if the holy sun of Svarog is held up before it. A Bes can only be slain by a blessed weapon. Even the killing of a Bes is an act of evil, and strengthens the power of the Black Serpent. Still, the church teaches that it will give less strength to the Black Serpent than letting the Bes attack and kill. An atonement ritual is performed by a sage after slaying a Bes to ritually cleanse oneself of this sin.
