Skagen Skipperskole

History

Skagen Skipperskole has trained navigators for both the fishing and merchant fleets since 1921.

The school also offers a wide range of maritime training and courses for the maritime sector.

The school is Denmark's only remaining maritime academy with approximately 100 students and 15 skilled and well-qualified employees.

The building

January 2012 saw the start of a whole new era in the school's history, with the opening of a beautiful new school building - in the most beautiful location in Denmark (many would argue). The location, with stunning views of the old royal villa Klitgården on Damstederne, makes the location unique.

The design of the building is based on the three elements of sea, ship and navigation, all of which are closely linked to seafaring. In this way, the school signals wisdom, security and friendliness. It takes advantage of the magnificent view of the water through the glass façade and the extended balcony, which embraces the first floor like a ship deck to the south and southwest. The facades are finished in concrete and clad in white glass, reflecting the ship's expansive surfaces and creating a bright, Nordic feel.

Education

The school offers the following classic maritime courses:

• Fishing skipper, 3rd degree

• Fishing skipper 1st degree

• Coastal skipper

• Seagoing skipper

• Coxswain

• Retraining course from 3rd degree skipper to coastal skipper

• Conversion from 1st degree fishing skipper to seed skipper

The students come from all over the Nordic countries and after graduation they are seen in exciting employment as navigators in the fishing and merchant fleet.

In autumn 2012, the school put two new TRANSAS simulators into operation, ensuring the school "State of the Art" in the simulator field. Here it is possible to support courses and training with realistic and up-to-date exercises.

Installationskunst

Tre kunstværker skabt af kunstnerduoen AVPD (Aslak Vibæk og Peter Døssing), der kunstnerisk arbejder i et felt mellem billedkunst og arkitektur. :

Light Tower - 13 meter højt glastårn (lystårnet) uden for Skipperskolen, som reflekterer solens lys i løbet af dagen.

Time Light - en indendørs installation som afspejler lyset fra et af Mærsks containerskibe, hvor i verden det end måtte befinde sig.

Gravity Lamp - en skibslampe som svinger i takt med vindens retning og styrke.

Kunstværkerne er indviet i 2013 og kostede samlet 1,3 mill. kroner, finansieret med halvdelen fra Skagen Skipperskole og halvdelen fra Statens Kunstfond.

Light Tower er et 13 meter højt lystårn, hvor sollyset bliver fanget i små lyskamre, der hen over døgnet er med til at ændre på tårnets udtryk. Lyset og vejret over Skagen vil få tårnet til at ændre udseende fra de helt lyse til de mørke nuancer og som forbipasserende vil man opleve at tårnet aldrig er ens. Light Tower er et tilføjet arkitektonisk element, der står uden for Skagen Skipperskole og som alle der går en tur langs havnen kan opleve.

Time Light er et lysværk i to dele. Den ene del er installeret i stueplanets midtergang og den anden del på væggen i skolens ”stævn”. De modtager lysmålinger fra et skib på den anden side af jorden. Når det er nat i Skagen, vil det være dag på den anden side af jorden, og gangen og mødelokalet på Skagen Skipperskole vil lyse op og kunne ses som funklende lyspunkter i natten. Der vil konstant blive sendt lys-billeder hjem til Skagen fra et skib, der sejler på verdenshavene og kunstværkerne knytter således et bånd fra Skagen Skipperskole til den globale skibsfart.

Gravity Lamp kan man opleve den omvendte virkelighed: På et virkeligt skib vil en lampe altid hænge i lod, mens skibet bevæger sig, men på Skagen Skipperskole står bygningen stille, mens lampen svinger rem og tilbage. Vindens retning og styrke omsættes til lampens bevægelse og naturens kræfter trækkes ind i skolens arkitektur.

Kunstværkerne til Skagen Skipperskole er finansieret i et samarbejde mellem Statens Kunstfond og Skagen Skipperskole. Skagen Skipperskole har afsat 650.000 kr. til kunst i forbindelse med den nyopførte skole tegnet af AART architects, hvilket svarer til 1,5% af byggesummen og Statens Kunstfond har ligeledes bidraget med 650.000 kr.

Installation art

Three artworks created by the artist duo AVPD (Aslak Vibæk and Peter Døssing), who work artistically in a field between visual art and architecture:

Light Tower - 13 meter high glass tower (light tower) outside the Skipperskolen, which reflects the sunlight during the day.

Time Light - an indoor installation that reflects the light from one of Maersk's container ships, wherever it may be in the world.

Gravity Lamp - a ship lamp that swings with the direction and strength of the wind.

The artworks were inaugurated in 2013 and cost a total of €1.3 million. Half of the funding came from Skagen Skipperskole and half from the Danish Arts Foundation.

The Light Tower is a 13-metre high light tower, where the sunlight is caught in small light chambers that help to change the tower's appearance throughout the day. The light and the weather over Skagen will make the tower change its appearance from the very light to the dark shades and as a passer-by you will experience that the tower is never the same. The Light Tower is an added architectural element that stands outside Skagen Skipperskole and that anyone walking along the harbour can experience.

Time Light is a light tower in two parts. One part is installed in the ground floor's central corridor and the other part on the wall in the school's "bow". They receive light measurements from a ship on the other side of the earth. When it is night in Skagen, it will be day on the other side of the earth, and the corridor and meeting room at Skagen Skipperskole will light up and be seen as sparkling points of light in the night. Images of light will constantly be sent home to Skagen from a ship sailing the world's oceans, and the works of art will thus forge a link between Skagen Skipperskole and global shipping.

Gravity Lamp allows you to experience the reverse reality: on a real ship, a lamp will always be hanging vertically while the ship is moving, but at Skagen Skipperskole, the building stands still while the lamp swings back and forth. The direction and strength of the wind are translated into the movement of the lamp and the forces of nature are drawn into the architecture of the school.

The artworks for Skagen Skipperskole were financed in collaboration between the Danish Arts Foundation and Skagen Skipperskole. Skagen Skipperskole has allocated DKK 650,000 for art in connection with the newly built school designed by AART architects, which corresponds to 1.5% of the construction sum, and the Danish Arts Foundation has also contributed DKK 650,000.
