Liverpool directories from my cousin Pat - 0ct 2010
We found that according to the street directories they hadn't been living on the dock all the time and had lived at quite a few different addresses in Liverpool.
The census of 1851
In 1849 the family were at 106 Mill St, Toxteth Park (once a much better area then than it is today);
in 1851 they had moved to 62 Hampton Street, Toxteth Park;
by 1855 they were at 8 Kensington Terrace, Kirkdale (where Walter William was born) then they moved again and Augustus’s father, Richard Pomeroy died in 1859 at Albert Dock House. By 1865 Augustus had become principal clerk, at Albert Dock Warehouses and he and both Harrison A and Walter W were listed as living at Albert Dock Offices and the final entry found Augustus at 3 Canning Street in 1871. However since coming home I have checked both the 1861 and 1871 censuses and the address given for the family on both is Albert Dock House.
The archivist didn't feel that they would have been living in one of the smaller Albert Dock houses as they were more for staff who were engaged in more physical work on the dock e.g. the piermaster but felt that they could actually have been living in Albert Dock House itself (photo attached) which was rather palatial and was both offices and accommodation for senior clerical staff.
I asked the archivist about all the other addresses given in the street directories and he couldn't really explain what was going on but suggested that maybe it was advantageous to use an Albert Dock House address for financial reasons on the census and on official documents such as birth and death certificates.
Unfortunately I couldn't get into the Albert Dock House itself as it is now offices for museum staff and not open to the public and had formerly been the Granada Building. Very frustrating to run out of time - would have loved to have had the time to go back and spend a whole day routing in the archives. Whether the family lived there or not Augustus would certainly have worked in the Albert Dock House which apparently looked the same in the 1800s as it does today.
