resume in October. Notices of the Long Beach Coin and Expo(Sept 8-10)
were sent out in early September ; free admission vouchers were also
provided to several of our members. I expect to be able to provide these
free vouchers for all future Long Beach shows. This is based on
discussions I had with representative of the Long Beach show when I was
at the recent ANA Worlds Fair of money.
Old and New Business: Several weeks and many phone calls later, we
are in the final stages of negotiation for a new meeting room for 2017. You
will recall that the city notified us that our existing room would no longer be
available to our club in 2017. The Costa Mesa Community Center facility
officially closes Dec 21, 2016 for extensive remodeling . Our new meeting
room will be in Orange Coast Universalist church located at 2845 Mesa
Verde Drive East, in Costa Mesa. (Corner of Adams and Mesa Verde Drive
East, behind Torelli Realty and across from Piecemakers. )
Our first meeting in the new facility will be on WEDNESDAY January 11,
2017. More information on this new meeting location will be provided in
future newsletters. The room will be accessible at 6:30PM for early set-up.
Thanks to all of our members, officers and members of our board of
directors who provided suggestions for sorting out this complex task of
finding a suitable room site for our club. The timely responsiveness of our
officers and board members ,who provided me encouragement to “carry
on” when I became frustrated and tired, was really appreciated! Special
thanks to Mark Baskin for his timely help and to Ken Arnold for supplying
his personal contacts at the Orange Coast Universalist church where we
successfully found an acceptable room for our club meetings.
Donations: Thanks to those who continue to support our club with
their regular donations; the support is greatly appreciated. Please
make a special effort to shop at OC RARE COIN and BULLION(Harbor
and 19th ,Costa Mesa) This local coin shop has been extremely
generous to our club ,giving us many valuable coins to support our
club auctions. The latest gift was a 2 1/2 peso gold coin, personally
delivered to our club by Tom Grinnell; previously they provided silver
eagles, silver dollars, etc. Show them your appreciation by shopping
at their facility at 1927 Harbor Blvd ,Unit B, in Costa Mesa.
Education Program: Jerry Kleeb presented a very interesting talk on
Hungarian Inflation Notes that provided a history lesson for the severity of
inflation in the Hungarian republic at the end of WWII . In 1945 and 1946,
the Hungarian pengo experienced the greatest hyperinflation even seen,
leaving behind a wide variety of numismatic artifacts. As usual, the talk
was very detailed showing the complexity of government mismanagement
of the economy along with ravaging of the Hungarian economy by
occupying foreign states of World War II. It is a sad story of the spoils of
war by invading armed forces during/after the war. Nice job Jerry!
Prizes: No gold drawing as held and I missed the winner of the 2 1/2 gold
peso drawing. Will the winner please let me know so I can provide the
information in our official club minutes.
