Announcements and New Business:
Change of Meeting Dates and Room
Our meeting room contract for 2012 was changed to the Hamilton Room with our meetings held on the second Tuesday of each month, beginning with the January 10, 2012 meeting. The Hamilton Room is across the hall from our old meeting room (Fairview), is twice the size of our old room and will better accommodate our growing membership. In the new 2012 rental contract, we occupy the room from 7PM until 10:30 PM. This gives our club an extra 30 minutes to complete our coin auctions, eliminating a source of aggravation for many of our members. Details of the room selection process were communicated to all members who then voted on various options via information surveys of our entire membership.
Annual Banquet
I conducted another survey of everyone to select preferred dates for our club banquet coming up in January. Banquet date options included 1/15, 1/22 and 1/29. Dates of Jan 22 or Jan 29 seem to be the dates preferred by most members (of those both expressing a preference and who are planning to attend). While I was doing this I also looked into providing restaurant options beyond Moonlight Pizza. Alternative restaurants identified were Mimi's (Harbor and Newport Beach Blvd.) and Golden Dragon (2023 Harbor Blvd.) in Costa Mesa. Both can provide a separate room for our estimated group of 20-30 or even more. Members at Mimiʼs can order off the standard menu. Costs at both restaurants are approximately $20 per person, tax tip and beverage included; desserts are extra.
Special Event in February
Jim Wells, noted historian and numismatist, will talk at our February 14 meeting. His presentation is entitled “ The War of 1812: The Notables, the Navies, the Numismatics”. In this bicentennial year of The War of 1812, what do we remember about it from our history books? Who were the participants? What heroes emerged? What was the Navyʼs role? Who “won”? And how is that war is remembered in numismatics, a field eager to commemorate heroes and momentous events? Mr Wellsʼ presentation includes many illustrations that address those questions.
Donations:
Many club members continue to donate worthy items for our club auctions, and our club really appreciates this continuing generosity.
Meeting Program:
November: Novemberʼs educational program was by Albertus on“Virginia City and the Carson City Mint”. The Carson City silver dollar collection display was extraordinary, all BU or above, and complimented the discussion very well. It was an informative talk enjoyed by all.
December: We celebrated our annual holiday Potluck at the December meeting and stuffed ourselves with choice salads, entrees and desserts and played enough Bingo to last until next year. I was having so much fun that I didnʼt keep track of all the winners, although the Awerkamp family seemed to be well represented.
Old Business:
Laura continues to maintain our club website. Send her any interesting numismatic items and remember to obtain copyright clearance permission for any published articles. Please review our latest progress. Some of our newer members like David are setting a good example for the rest of us by providing coin articles for our website. Good job, David!
