Minutes of October 2011 Meeting

Membership and Guests:

We now have 80 paid up members for 2011. New members include Jocelyn, Ian, David, and Janet. Ryan and Bud were guests.

Announcements:

Les reminded me that our meeting room rental contract is coming due next January. John indicated that our CD was maturing in a few days.

Old Business:

Laura continues to maintain our club website. Send her any interesting numismatic items and remember to obtain copyright clearance permission for any published articles. Please review our latest progress.

New Business:

Les wants us to be prepared to discuss our meeting room contract renewal at the November meeting. Questions include whether we want a larger room, another location or simply a renewal of existing arrangements. We discussed several different strategies to invest our club savings. Mike reminded all of us that these monies are needed to insure the future continuity of our club and that any investments need to be ultra conservative, even if the yields are extremely low. After much discussion, Bill made a motion to roll over our CD in full for another year, while we continue to explore additional alternatives for some of our other savings. For example, John has done a good job of buying gold raffle prizes on price cycle “dips”, thereby saving on our raffle costs.

Donations:

Many club members continue to donate worthy items for our club auctions, and our club really appreciates this continuing generosity.

Meeting Program:

Last monthʼs educational program was by Gordon on Continental Currency. Gordon provided an interesting perspective on 17th century life in the New England colonies and the difficulties they had getting sufficient quantities of gold for coinage. Commerce, wages and cost of living data in the Massachusetts Bay colony were discussed in detail. It was an informative talk enjoyed by all.

Prize winners:

Larry won the Dos Pesos gold.
