Minutes of May 2011 Meeting

Membership and Guests:

We now have 63 paid up members for 2011. Guests were Chuck, Robb and Louis.

Announcements:

Raffle tickets are available for gold and silver coin drawings sponsored by NASC at the Golden State Coin Show, Aug. 27-28 2011. Five tickets for $3, and our club gets $1.50. ANA and NASC will sponsor “Fundamentals of U.S. Coin Counterfeit Detection Seminar” on September 9-10 2011 at the Long Beach Coin Expo. Cost is $198 for ANA and NASC members and $298 for non-members.

Old Business:

Considerable progress was made to formalize a website for our club. Club officers have provided biographical inputs to Laura has agreed to be manager of the site. Laura has built much of the site which can now b e accessed at www.occoinclub.com .

New Business:

None

Donations:

Several club members continue to donate many worthy items for our club auctions, and our club really appreciates this continuing generosity.

Educational Program:

Mark presented a thorough and interesting talk on “Coin Scales and Counterfeit Detection.” Mark provided many examples of ingenious antique coin scales and provided many examples of how counterfeit coins have been made over the ages. He certainly made all of us wary of the counterfeit world that exists “out there” andcautioned us to inspect all coins very carefully and to know the individual dealers supplying our coins. Be particularly cautious when purchasing coins on various popular auction sites.

Show and Tell:

Our usual cast of characters exhibited everything from Mexican gold coin earrings to rare coin books, electrum alloy, coins from the Netherlands, and paper currency from Leavenworth. Every month these show and tell items illustrate the breadth of our memberʼs collecting diversity.

Prize Winners:

Some of the winners were Bob W., Ron S., Jim H., Bill P., Les, Glen, and Albertus. Lee won the membership drawing and Dan won the early bird. Bill P. won the Dos Pesos gold and Elaine won the 1/10 oz. gold.
