Describe Light

Learning Goal

  • Make use of lighting vocabulary.
  • Analyze photographic lighting.
  • Develop a sense of how light affects the overall quality/feel of an image.

Prerequisites

  • Course Projects Blog

Directions

  1. Go to the Flickr Creative Commons.
  2. Find some images with lighting that you enjoy - try to find a diverse set of lighting situations.
  3. Repost three of the images to your course projects blog, making a note of each image's author.
  4. Describe the light of each image in about 3-4 sentences per image.

Helpful Questions:

  • Is there one light source or multiple light sources?
  • For each light source:
    • What is it's direction? Where is it coming from?
    • How intense is the light?
    • Is it soft or hard?
    • Is it warm or cool?
    • Is it direct or indirect?
  • Does it convey an overall mood or feeling?
