Week 02: Scene Layout & Set Dressing

Learning Goals

Students will:

  • Set dress an empty room.

  • Find assets in the Assets Browser.

  • Place objects with the Place Tool.

    1. Make a "castle" using primitive Cubes, Cones, and Cylinders

    1. TurboSquid.com

    2. Recommended File Formats for Imported Models (in order or preference):

*.c4d Cinema 4D

*.fbx For exchanging animation / characters

*.obj Brings in a single static mesh (no sub parts, probably no materials) but almost always works

*.abc Alembic - Good for complex scenes but not great for materials

  1. Perfection =/= Realism

Homework

What:

  1. Pick an interior location from a play, story, or your life.

  2. Collect reference imagery into a mood board (Google Slides / Photoshop are fine, whatever tool you prefer).

  3. Construct an open set of that environment and dress it using preset models.

    1. Don't worry too much about materials/lighting, we'll tackle those in future weeks.

Deliverables:

Screenshots (or renderings) of:

  1. Your moodboard.

  2. Your set-dressed environment.

Due: By the start of our next class session in our shared Google Drive.

Submission

  1. Open our classes Shared Google Drive folder.

  2. Navigate to the Dailies folder.

  3. Navigate to this week's folder.
