Today being the 4th of July, there are many activities in celebration of the holiday. I wonder however what is being celebrated. Of course a true "patriot" would celebrate something on this day so I've been considering what that means.
It seems to me that a patriot is someone who understands the principles upon which our nation was founded and continues to fight in defense of those principles. If they are celebrating today, they are celebrating the founding principles and the potential of our country in adopting them again. They are celebrating all patriots of the past and present.

Our nation has strayed so far from its principled roots that it's hard to celebrate today, but I will continue the fight the best I can.
