The Privilege of Driving

This page explores public policy related to being able to drive on public roads.

For example, Utah currently allows a Driving Privilege Card to be issued to people who aren't legally living in the United States.

Some applicable questions:

  • What business does government have restricting anyone from driving?
    • If someone has been found guilty of repeatedly driving in an unsafe manner or of causing accidents, it seems reasonable to restrict their driving privileges as a matter of public safety.
      • If a public safety officer determines that someone is driving in an unsafe manner or is involved in a traffic accident, they may reasonably ask for identification. Identification is a huge issue related to public policy. Ideally it should be identification that is difficult to forge such as biometrics (e.g., picture, fingerprint).
