2011-10-29 Email exchange on selection process for new mayor:

I'm concerned about the manner in which the new mayor was selected. Why didn't council members ask candidates questions to find out more about their qualifications?
The process was set up where each candidate received equal and fair treatment. Each had an opportunity to present themselves both in written form and in public. That's been my experience with the last two appointments. They didn't ask me questions when I was appointed to replace Mr. Forsythe nor were there questions when Mrs. Black was appointed to replace Mr. Sandstrom.
Why was the meeting closed to the public?
All meetings of the city council that directly involve personnel issues, litigation and property acquisition are closed to the public by state law to protect the privacy of the individuals and the sensitivity of the situations. Again, it's the same process that was followed in previous appointments.
Thanks for asking. I'm thrilled that the council selected an individual that will be a wonderful mayor and that all council members agreed with the appointment. Best wishes, Mark
