Interesting topic -- I'm adding it to my wiki.
I believe Utah should not seek federal funds for this:
- the funding violates the Constitution
- it violates the principle of self reliance
However, this is a very tricky area and I generally don't criticize other positions. Imagine the scenario where the government takes 99% of your income in taxes, but allows you to apply for it back for things like housing, food,... In other words you don't have enough money to live without succumbing to a government that doesn't follow very good principles.
A related example: When I filed my taxes last year using TurboTax there were a number of federal deductions and credits coming up. I went ahead and took them even though they violate correct principles. I believe our government is so corrupt and taxes are so abusive, that I will try to minimize what I pay.
Another related example: I was listening to Dr. Laura while driving and heard about a young man who refused his parent's offer to subsidize one of his purchases because he wanted to pay for it himself. Dr. Laura praised the young man and I do as well for following the principle of self reliance. I don't think he would necessarily be wrong for accepting the help or that the parents were wrong for offering. Perhaps it's a higher law that we should strive to live.
