The 12 Days of Middle School

On the first day of Middle School my teachers gave to me, a locker for keeping all my stuff.

On the second day of Middle School my teacher gave to me, 2 new friends and a locker for keeping all my stuff.

On the third day of Middle School my teachers gave to me, 3 world maps, 2 new friends and a locker for keeping all my stuff.

… and so on.

This pattern continues for 12 days.

Here are the gifts with their relative values (the price, by the way, is PER ITEM, not for the whole set):

• 1st day: a locker ($28.95)

• 2nd day: 2 friends (Priceless! But they don't like you much, so you pay them to hang around. $50)

• 3rd day: 3 maps ($8.50 ea.)

• 4th day: 4 books to read ($6.95 ea.)

• 5th day: 5 new textbooks ($37.50 ea.)

• 6th day: 6 hallway passes ($1 each on the black market)

• 7th day: 7 AIR Test Tutoring Sessions ($12 ea.)

• 8th day: 8 calculators ($5.50 ea.)

• 9th day: 9 sheets of paper ($.02 ea.)

• 10th day: 10 pairs of scissors ($3.75 ea.)

• 11th day: 11 hours of homework ($7.25 each on the black market)

• 12th day: 12 sharpened pencils ($.25 ea.)

Your job is to find out how much money Middle School can cost according to this song. Using Google Sheets, we will create a spreadsheet on the computer so that it will do all the math. You need to show the 12 days and all of the items bought on each day. We will set up formulas for the computer to figure the cost of all of the 12 days. 

Here's a hint on how to get started...

1. Open a new Spreadsheet in Google Drive.

2. In cell A4, type The 12 Days of Middle School.

3. Starting in B6 and going across type Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 and so on until Day 12 is in M6.

4. Type Number of items in N6.

5. Type Cost per item in O6.

6. Type Total Costs in P6.

7. Starting in A7 and going down, type in the items in order that is above. (i.e. A7 will be locker, A8 will be friends, etc.)

8. Then enter the quantity of each item in the appropriate cell. (i.e. B7 will have 1 for one locker, C7 will have 1 and C8 will have 2 for 2 new friends and a locker, etc.) Continue this pattern until you have all gifts entered.

24. Decorate your page by adding new fonts, shading, and borders to your spreadsheet. Make sure all currency has dollar signs and two decimal places. Bold all of row 6 and all of column A. Remember the Chart Wizard's tutelage and create a chart or graph to go with your spreadsheet.

25. Show Mr. Alexander the box labeled Grand Total. He will check your work against his and give you the bonus points if you're correct!
