Anchor
APN Script / Anchor Duties
You are responsible for writing, producing, and editing the main news segment. As an anchor, you are expected to take pride in your appearance so that you present your best self to the camera. Try to present your best self on camera. You are also expected to rehearse to deliver the news in a professional, engaging way. Smiling and using voice inflection are important! Have fun when you anchor, and remember YOU are the face of JAJHS!
If you would find it useful to know how to make chyrons (your name/title on the screen), please view the tutorial!
→ FIRST! Open the ANNOUNCEMENTS FORM tab and KEEP IT OPEN as you write the script! If a staff member puts in an announcement, they expect you to include all the details. You may improve on the wording, but do not leave anything out! You are also expected to add student birthdays and menu for the day. Finally, you can also use any of the extra resources on the bottom of this page if you feel like your anchor segment is not fully "fleshed out."
1. Start each script with:
Anchor 1: Good morning, Plain City, I’m ________
Anchor 2: And I’m ______________ and this is APN for (day and date).
2. Each anchor needs to deliver a full paragraph (one long or two shorter announcements) before switching to the other anchor.
3. Add humorous/interesting details to catch the audience’s attention.
If the information is this:
Lunchtime intramural sports are starting.
First: 3-on-3 basketball.
4 divisions - 7th girls, 7th boys, 8th girls, and 8th boys.
Teams of 3-5 players: come to the gym Thursday at lunch to sign up.
You must be at the meeting Thursday to enter the tournament.
Champions of each division win a pizza party.
The meeting and signups start at 12:00 p.m. Any questions, see Mr. Woolley.
Rewrite it with fun/interesting details to make it more interesting:
Anchor 1: Calling all lunchtime athletes! It’s time for intramural sports at lunch! Our first sport is 3-on-3 basketball. We will have 4 divisions - 7th grade girls, 7th grade boys, 8th grade girls, and 8th grade boys. Can you score on the court? Form a team of 3-5 people and come to the gym on Thursday at lunch to sign up. You must be at the meeting Thursday to enter the tournament. Playing all that basketball will probably make you hungry! Champions of each division win a pizza party with their team! The Thursday meeting and sign ups start at 12:00 noon in the gym. If you have any questions, see Mr. Woolley. We’ll see you and your team on the court! [pretends to shoot a basketball]
4. Add fun/interesting detail to make shorter announcements longer:
If the information is this: See Mr. Kyle in room 32 to sign up for Wrestling Camp.
Rewrite it so it is more interesting:
Anchor 1: Hey, all you grapplers, do you think I could be a wrestler? [flexes muscles] If you want to improve your chances of making the wrestling team, sign up for Coach Kyle's Wrestling Camp! Get on over to room 32 to sign up with Mr. Kyle. And I’ll see you on the mat! [flexes muscles again]
5. Add transitions between the announcements:
If the information is this:
See Mr. Burton in room 32 to sign up for Wrestling Camp.
Boys basketball players need to be excused at 1:30 tomorrow for their game in Dublin.
Connect announcements with transitions:
Anchor 2: Get on over to room 32 to sign up with Mr. Burton. And I’ll see you on the mat! [flexes muscles again] In other sports news, teachers, please excuse the boys basketball players at 1:30 tomorrow for their game in Dublin. Bring us home another win, boys!
6. Film a sign-off
Please also film a goodbye in order to sign off of this week's broadcast.
As an example, your script may look something like this structure:
Greeting/Date/Introduce Anchors
Read announcements, including sports
Read student birthdays
Read menu for the day
Read any tertiary concepts (fun holidays, sports schedule, events, etc.)
Attempt to keep the announcements to roughly 60-90 seconds.
My advice for filming these segments is to write and film everything but #2 above first. Once it's filmed, you can write and film #2 when it's closer to the air date. Then edit it all together!
NOTE: Read your script aloud (many times!) to correct errors and make sure it sounds GREAT. Is it good enough for APN?
Make sure to practice before filming!
