News of the World/Vocab of the Day Reporter
APN News of the World/Vocab of the Day Reporter Duties
You are responsible for writing, producing, and editing two segments: News of the World and Vocab of the Day. Each of these segments should be around 30-60 seconds.
I would highly recommend researching/writing/recording the Vocab of the Day segment earlier in the week in order to get the most up-to-date news stories before filming.
You are expected to rehearse to deliver your segments in a professional, engaging way. Smiling and using voice inflection are important! Have fun, and remember YOU are the face of JAJHS!
If you would find it useful to know how to make chyrons (your name/title on the screen), please view the tutorial!
NEWS OF THE WORLD NOTES:
1. Choose a news story that's happening in the world right now. Local news stories are fine, too! Some great, unbiased sources for news include: npr.com, cnn.com, bbc.com, and AP News.
2. Write a short summation (20-30 seconds) of the event. Remember the writer's W questions:
What Happened?
When did it happen?
Who was involved?
Where did it happen?
Why or how did it happen (if that’s known)?
Be sure when you're writing, you're using your own words. Do not plagiarize from your source.
3. Record a segment telling other students what's happening in the world. Use your knowledge of professionalism and enthusiasm to make it as good as possible! Please add graphics to show what you're talking about.
NOTE: Read your script aloud (many times!) to correct errors and make sure it sounds GREAT. Is it good enough for APN?
Make sure to practice before filming.
VOCAB OF THE DAY NOTES:
We're about to become the teachers instead of the students! You're responsible for teaching a new vocabulary word in an interesting way.
This segment is simple: head to any one of several word-of-the-day sites, find an interesting word, and define it for people in an interesting way.
This should be done in two sections:
Defining the word (giving the definition, part of speech, and making sure you're pronouncing it correctly). Please also post the word on screen so people can see it and how it's spelled!
Doing a small skit or sketch that exemplifies the word.
This can be as complicated and intricate as you'd like! Get a little silly with it and have fun!
However, if you're planning on doing a slang term, make sure to run it by Mr. Alexander first.
