School PSA/Review Reporter

APN School PSA/Review Reporter Duties

You are responsible for writing, producing, and editing one segment that may vary from week to week. This segment may be a SCHOOL PSA, or, failing that, a REVIEW. You will be informed on the first day of planning (if not sooner!) which you'll be tasked to do. Either of these segments should be somewhere between 90 and 120 seconds.

You are expected to rehearse to deliver your segments in a professional, engaging way. Smiling and using voice inflection are important! Have fun, and remember YOU are the face of JAJHS!

If you would find it useful to know how to make chyrons (your name/title on the screen), please view the tutorial!

SCHOOL PSA NOTES:

This segment is a fairly loose one! If requested, you'll be doing a commercial/PSA for something around the school. This might consist of a notification about a school dance, a request to keep the lunchroom clean, or information about a food drive!

    • If someone requests a PSA, please try to make it interesting! This is your opportunity to present a skit or fun concept based around this idea. Please do not simply repeat the information. It must be presented in a way that makes it seem fun, engaging, and important.

    • Be creative! Even things as simple as "walk on the correct side of the hallway" can be humorous if presented in the right way.

REVIEW NOTES:

If no PSA is requested of you, you must instead do a review.

1. Choose a piece of media you've enjoyed lately. This can be an album, a movie, a TV show, a video game, a book, a local restaurant, whatever!

2. Write in generalities about the media. Think of questions like:

  • What genre of media is it? (Nonfiction? Fantasy? Adventure? Sci-fi?)

  • Does it belong to a series/universe? Is it an adaptation?

  • How long is it?

  • Is there anything that would be helpful for the reader to know about the creator? For instance, did the creator create other popular pieces of media, or are they a first-time author?

  • What ages is the media geared to? Does it have a rating?

3. Then, drill down to specifics.

  • What's a general outline of the plot? (Think: a back-of-the-book blurb.)

  • Who are the main characters?

  • What's the setting?

4. Finally, give your opinion about the media.

  • Why do you think other people would enjoy it? Why did you enjoy it (if you did) or why didn't you (if you didn't)?

          • If it made you laugh or cry or think about it for days, be sure to include that! If it affected your emotions, that's huge.

  • How does it compare with other pieces of media that are in the same genre or by the same creator?

  • Did the media feel complete, or did it feel as though key elements were left out?

  • How does the media compare to other pieces like it you've experienced?

  • Are there mistakes/bugs/goofs?

  • What was your favorite part of the media?

  • Would you have done anything differently had you been the creator?

  • Finally, give it a star rating out of 5 or 10! It's important that people have a concrete idea of your opinion.

Be sure when you're writing, you're using your own words. Do not plagiarize from your source--be sure to cite it. (For example, some of the questions above were adapted from www.mensaforkids.org.) Use your knowledge of professionalism and enthusiasm to make it as good as possible! Please add graphics/b-roll to show what you're talking about.

NOTE: Read your script aloud (many times!) to correct errors and make sure it sounds GREAT. Is it good enough for APN?

Make sure to practice before filming.
