Shopping Spree
Congratulations! You've just won a beauty contest and have been awarded $50,000 to go on a shopping spree. You will visit your favorite online stores and load your virtual shopping cart with things you would like to buy. Using Google Spreadsheets, you will create a spreadsheet to keep track of your spending. If you'd like, check out Mr. Alexander's example!
Procedure
Make sure you are signed into Google Drive.
Open this link.
Click "File," and then "Make a copy." Give it a new name.
Go to your own Google Drive and access the document.
Prepare the formulas so that the spreadsheet will keep track of your spending as you shop. (A formula help guide is available to you.)
Go shopping! Visit your favorite stores online and discover the prices of items you would like to buy.
Enter the cost of items into your spreadsheet and watch the formulas work their magic.
Format your spreadsheet. Add cell borders, shading, a decorative title and pictures
Tips
You must spend between $49,000 and $50,000. If you spend more than $50,000 or under $49,000 you will be penalized.
Buy things for other people, if you'd like. Be generous. Think of your family, friends, teachers, etc. Especially me.
Consider donating money to a charity you feel strongly about.
Only use borders in places that deserve the special attention! (This means do not put borders around empty boxes. Click Borders->No Borders to remove them.)
Grading criteria
To earn the full 60 points, your spreadsheet must contain:
A fancy title. (You decide what the title says.)
Correct formulas.
Correct number formatting.
A variety of shopping items and quantities.
Cell borders.
Decorative shading (filling cells with the paint bucket).
At least 5 pictures.
Easy readability.
A chart detailing each item and the item's TOTAL cost (not unit cost)
Formula formatting
Use the following structure for writing your formulas. Replace the cells with the ones you need to use.
There are a lot of websites you might want to use for this project. If you're looking to use a specific website, run it by Mr. Alexander, and he'll let you know if it's okay. In the meantime, check out these websites, which are a great place to start!:
For general purchases of everything from books to electronics to clothes, Amazon is a wonderful place to look.
A good resource for those of you looking to buy a car with your imaginary money. 16 is not so far away!
A fine place to find food and drink! (Use the username alexansa@japioneers.org, and password "students1")
eBay (READ BELOW CAREFULLY)
Need to find something on the cheap? Use eBay! However, you can ONLY use auctions with a Buy It Now option!
Many students ask if they can buy animals. Conventional housepets are available in a lot of places online, but exotic animals are more difficult to find. Try this website!
Want to spend EXACTLY $50,000? Need something that costs $1.76 and having trouble finding it? Search Amazon by exact price!
Flights? Hotels? Is travel your fancy? I tend to use kayak.com, which offers multiple options for flying and staying.
Looking for cheap, random stuff? Check out this site that trolls Amazon, Target, and other sites for lots of options of $1 junk!
