Socratic Seminar
In Seminar, students read and analyze a common text or piece of literature. Students create open ended discussion questions for the moderator of the seminar to ask during seminar. The students then create a discussion circle with half of the students. While the inner-circle participants wrestle with the text, the outer-circle participants are assigned to observe one person in the inner circle and offer her or him constructive feedback midway through class. These roles then switch, so that inner-circle participants move to the outer circle; in that way, each student has the opportunity to do the work of thinker and observer. Once both groups have participated in each role, students will complete a self reflection on what they have learned about the topic and what they have learned about themselves as a seminarian. This year we will be partaking in three seminars.
