5/23/23 Today we did a tricky puzzle, it consisted of kabob sticks and a piece of paper. We separated icons with the kabob sticks. Then, the people who didn't finish their organelle projects continued to work on them and everyone else played mancala, challenge 24 and Tiffs, Riffs and Pix. After that we did our weekly Ted-Ed riddle of the day. It was extremely complicated, yet fun. It was about goblins, treefolk and elves, they were dragon Jousting. Lastly we read Gregor the Overlander.

5/16/23 Today we started the day off a little different, instead of silent reading we did a grid proplexer. Then we did book consultant, which Celina did a great job with. Next, we work and finished our cell organelle projects. We did our Ted-Ed riddle of the day. It had to do powerful crystals. Cool, right. We did lots of trial and error. Finally we did our read allowed(Gregor the Overlander). What a great day!

During the beginning of class, Om was the book consultant. He shared the book Space Case. After that, we did some silent reading. Next, we did our Organelle research. After that, we did a Ted-Ed riddle called The Fish Riddle. It was so hard! At the end, Mrs. McElhinney read Gregor the Overlander.

During the beginning of the day, Izzy was the book consultant. She told us about the book Horseman. Then, Mrs. McElhinney read the book The Universe in You: A Microscopic Journey By: Jason Chin. We analyzed the book and took notes about it. We also discussed the book, and we wrote facts about the book. After that, we did a riddle about Zombies. Finally, Mrs. McElhinney read Gregor the Overlander to us.

4/4/24 Today, we looked at onion and cheek cells with the microscope. Later, we got into groups and watched a video on the similarities and differences of animal and plant cells. We used this information to make a headline for a newspaper.

To start off the day, Ethan was the book consultant. He consulted the book Fort by Gordan Corman. We then finished the mystery mascot sheet with our microscopes. We look at sand, onion powder, flour, sugar, foot powder and salt. It was very exciting. Then, we kind of learned how to do forensics. Mingrui(Birthday boy) led us in breathing guide and then we read Gregor the Overlander.

3/14 SNOW DAY
03/07/23 Vinny was the book consultant and he talked about a book called "Fortunately the Milk." We also did our socratic seminar. We talked about changemakers and if kids can be them. We partnered up and reviewed each other. Everyone improved from last time and it was so much fun. I cannot wait for next Quest. -Bella and Ben
02/28/23 Ben was book consultant today. He presented the mystery book, The Ninja Detectives by Octavia Spencer. The root words were lev meaning to lift and manu meaning hand. We chose a new article to provide us with more evidence for the Socratic Seminar we will be having next week. We learned what the parts are on a compound microscope. We also learned how to handle a microscope.

Today we did peel the fruit for a article about if kids can be changemakers. Our Latin root was form. Our book consultant was Andrew, he talked about a book called Nightmare Hour. Then we read Gregor the Overlander. Today was awesome!

1/31/23 The kids presented their scripts today. Ten weeks of dedication and hard work resulted in fabulous skits! You should be very proud of your perseverance and diligence! I apologize for the sound quality, many of the students are hard to hear.
01/24/23 We started the day with some reading. After that, we had our book consultant, Jacob. Our Latin Root for this week was vid/vis. We then transitioned to working on our scripts and slides. We finished the scripts and the slides and will be ready to present next week. After that, we discussed what makes a play great. At the end of the day, we settled down and read a few chapters of Gregor the Overlander. -Andrew & Xuanan
01/17/23 Today our book consultant was AG which was Alyssa Gu. Alyssa talked about a really cool book called Two Degrees by Alan Gratz. After that, we did our Latin roots, which was scrib/script. We did our Biography Play, we finished it up today. We had another group review our writing. We made a slideshow for all the facts we did not include in the play. It was so much fun! -Bella and Yuwen
01/03/23 Our book consultant today was Brian and he talked about Zeus The Mighty: The Maze of the Menacing Minotaur as his book. The Latin stem of the day was spec(t). It's meaning is to look at. We read through the rubric (how our scripts are being graded) Then, we came up with 3 important ideas, 2 goals, and 1 question for our biography project script. Next, we actually worked on our script. Finally, we listened to Gregor the Overlander. Today was another great day! -Benjamin and Alyssa!!!
12/20 Today we had Xuanan as the book consultant and talked about The Lightning Thief as his book. The Latin stem of the day was circ meaning round. Then we continued with our story arc and started our script. After that we got put in groups to comment on the story arcs. We had to make three comments about the other groups story arc. At the end Mrs. McElhinney read us our book, Gregor the Overlander. It was a awesome day! - Lucas & Raina
12/13 Today we worked on our biography project. Before that, we had Yuwen do book consultant. He did Inkspell. After doing our biography project, we had read aloud. We started Gregor the Overlander. Today was great!!! -Brian & Andrew
12/6 Our book consultant today was Vinny and he presented The Witches. Our Latin root of the day is omni, which means all. We also worked on our scripts for our biography play. We wrote about about the setting of the place and a little bit about the plot. We also watched a video about a person who spent a lot of money to help the Mozambique people and animals by giving them a sustainable economy. Today was an amazing day! -Bella and Xuanan
11/29 Our Latin Stem of the day was hydr, meaning water. Celina gave was book consultant and she presented the first book in the The Keeper of the Lost Cities series. Today we started working on brainstorming our biography project. We wrote a 3-4 paragraph summary of the person we chose. We also got to pick our groups for our project. We also did a Habits of Mind mind map on six new habits. It was a busy day! Izzy
11/22 Today we finished our biography notes. We then played games and had fun. We could either play a game or read a book. Some of the games we played were Sudoku, Guess who, Mancala, Soma cubes, and the 24 game. They were all thinking games. TODAY was so fun.

11/15/2022 Today we worked some more on our biography projects. Then we did a brain break, and our record was 36 seconds. In the game, we passed a ball to a person, and we went around in a pattern, and after you threw, you sat down so no one would pass to you again. Mrs. McElhinney timed us. :D Then we went and worked on our project for 30 minutes, again. Last we did Soma Cubes!!! YAY! Today was very fun.

11/1/2022 Today was a good day! We discussed a lot about questions about our biography project people. We learned how to access many different databases to help us research on our biography project. After that, we did name cards game to learn about our peers. We read a story called "Barnum Brown" by an author named Jay Leslie. We took notes and wrote about notes facts from the story and some questions that we have about the story. Once we finished that, we started our read aloud book called Refugee. We read about a boy in Syria and a boy in Nazi Germany.

10/11 Today was a great day! We did Peel the Fruit on the short story All Summer in a Day.,. We also talked about our biography project. I was going to do a the first Chinese female warrior, but she lived a long time ago. :( We did more index cards. They were really fun. The cards we did were Mingrui, Alyssa, and Izzy, if I remember correctly.

10/4 Today we had a great day! First, we read books. Then, we worked on the mind map. Next, we did the assignment called "Peel The Fruit" after reading the picture book, The Book Who Harnessed the Wind. Next, the substitute read a chapter of "Refugee". After that, the kids from Dzikas and Yattaw went to get their school pictures, while the rest of us read. Finally, we created first Trimester Goals in Google Keep. That was our day.
9/27 Today we had fun. We talked about change. We learned a new strategy for Making Thinking Visible: Peel the Fruit. We created presentations about four Habits of Mind: persisting, managing impulsivity, thinking and communicating with clarity and precision, and taking responsible risks. We also read Refugee.
9/20 Today we learned all about giving 100% in QUEST. 100% means to pay attention and give QUEST your all. We made meaning of what 100% means. To get into groups we used animals and their sounds to find our partners. It was an obnoxiously fun way to find partners. We read a folktale entitled The Old Woman and the Physician.
9/13 Wow, today flew by! We learned all about the ins and outs of our classroom jobs! Andrew was a fabulous gong ringer! We learned about our classmates by playing Four Tables. We started learning about Greek and Latin roots, which we will be studying all year. Refugee, by Alan Gratz was selected as the read aloud for the year. Everyone decided to come back next week (ha-ha)!
