On September 21-22, the Granite State Comicon was held in Manchester, New Hampshire. It’s a yearly event that people can attend to meet special guests, buy merchandise both official and unofficial, dress up in cosplay, and just have fun. While it is primarily focused on comic books, fans of pretty much anything are welcomed.
In 2023 I went dressed as Mimikyu, and I met someone wearing the same costume as me; I even got the chance to take a picture with them. This year I attended again with my brother, and the two of us coordinated our costumes to match while also dressing up as our own characters. I was Mesmerizer Hatsune Miku, and he was Blue Spy from TF2 disguised as Mesmerizer Kasane Teto. If you actually know who any of those characters are, you should definitely come to the next comicon!
The convention was amazing, it was full to the brim of cosplayers, artists selling merch, and even some celebrities. I actually ended up getting quite a lot of attention for my costume, having several people asking to take pictures with me. My favorite group was two people who ran up to me from across the room, shouted “Hatsune Miku!”, handed me a small whale eraser, and then ran away. It has quickly become my favorite keepsake from the convention!
My family and I got to meet and get a photo with John Rhys-Davies, the actor who played Gimli in the Lord of the Rings movies. We only got to interact with him for a few seconds as the line was very long, but it was clear from just those moments that he is a delightful person and he made an already wonderful convention even more fun!
Overall the convention was an astoundingly positive experience. I got to meet new people, buy some merchandise, get a photo with a celebrity, and get recognized a couple of times myself! But what always fascinates me most is how so many people from so many different communities can come together in one place to just have fun and be themselves. No one is worried about getting judged for being weird because everyone is weird. Comicon is the one place you can see a giant robot Godzilla to Wonder Woman with a cigarette on the same day. It’s freeing to be able to walk down the street and not care if anyone is staring at you for having a giant blue wig on your head. I’d like to encourage more people to live their everyday lives with that kind of mentality. Just because you’re not in the middle of a convention with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle standing next to you, doesn't mean you can’t have fun being who you are regardless of judgment.
