Exeter High School Student-Run Newspaper!
On February 10, 2024, a group of EHS students and staff will plunge into the ocean at Hampton Beach for the Special Olympics. This event is called the Penguin Plunge and will raise money to fund events for the Special Olympics.
Please see below for more information, and make sure to sign up!
WHO can join the team? ThisPenguin Plunge is open to both high school students and staff to participate in! Spread the word to your friends, and even try and get a few teachers if you can!
WHAT exactly is the plunge and the stuff leading up to it? Basically, at a designated time on February 10, the team will go running into the (very cold) ocean. How far into the water you go is up to you. After the plunge, everyone will dry off and change, and then head across the street to the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom where there will be lunch and awards.
WHEN is this happening? The event begins Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 9:00am. 9:00 to 11:00 is check-in time; 11:30 is the costume parade; 12:00 is the plunge and then lunch; and then awards are at 1:00pm, to finish off the day. Check out the SONH website with the full schedule here.
WHERE is this happening? The plunge will take place on Hampton Beach in NH, across from the Casino Ballroom, but all plungers should meet at the Ballroom in the morning.
WHY are we going into the ocean in the middle of the winter? As for the big question regarding the purpose of this event: it is to raise money for Special Olympics. All the money that everyone raises will go into funding events for Special Olympics, similar to the fall bowling that many just participated in, and the track and field event that is coming up in the spring. Leading up to February 10th, everyone will be individually fundraising. In order to participate in the plunge everyone must fundraise at least $250. This may seem like a lot, but don't worry! If you send the link for your fundraising page around to family, friends, and coworkers, and put it on social media, you'll be amazed how quickly donations can add up.
As an added bonus, there are special incentives you can earn from fundraising! This is also an opportunity to earn Blue Hawk Cup points for your class. The details for that are still being worked out.
