Trends & The Seasons
In the age of influencers, consumerism has skyrocketed- all because of trends. Today, we are more likely to be influenced by, well, influencers, on Tik Tok or Instagram. A lot of the materialistic “things” that these social figures convince us to buy have one thing in common: they have to do with the season that is right around the corner. For instance, we might see our favorite influencer sipping pumpkin spice lattes or modeling new sweaters. The problem? All of these encouragements to buy seasonal items are occurring well before the new season has even started—fall drinks are introduced in August or sweaters are advertised at the end of July. This promotes rapid seasonal changes and over-consumption, and it’s all because of new trends and the dwindling popularity of living in the moment by enjoying the current season rather than constantly longing for the next best thing or season.
I talked to Brooke Fowler, a Junior at EHS to get her input on this issue of living in the moment versus being influenced by the trends of upcoming seasons:
Question: What is your favorite season?
-Summer, because of the nice weather and no school, also going to the beach.
What are the summer trends that are your favorite?
-Matching sets with shorts that match the tops, skincare products like Glowscreen (a sunscreen)
What was your mindset during the season before summer?
-“The thought of summer is getting me through everything right now” is basically how I was thinking the whole time.
Do you feel as though you were able to “live in the moment” during the spring?
-No, but definitely during summer. School definitely had to do with this, though.
When did you start seeing advertisements geared towards summer activities/products?
-I would say around March
When do you normally start seeing holiday commercials?
-Beginning-mid October
Throughout the winter months, what does your mindset generally revolve around?
- Getting to Christmas and the overall holiday spirit.
Through Brooke’s responses, we can see a trend of her mindset focusing on the big events of the coming seasons rather than living in the moment. Perhaps we can all ask ourselves, is it really worth it to be wrapped up in the upcoming trends and seasonal festivities, or should we focus more on the small things in life?
